A new report shows South Africa's greenhouse gas emissions - which cause climate change - have peaked, but more work lies ahead to meet the 2030 target range, said the Presidential Climate Commission. Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Barbara Creecy this week published the draft of the ninth Greenhouse Gas Inventory for public comment. The inventory covers the period 2000 to 2022, and estimates the current emissions levels and trends in the country. South Africa has also made commitments to limit emissions to a certain range - known as the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). South Africa's NDC for 2025 is a range between 398 and 510 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) and 350-420 MtCO2e by 2030.

As countries around the world invest millions in vaccinations to curb the spread of bird flu, the South African government remains unyielding in its policy to refuse compensation to farmers – and it’s a policy that’s resulting in the spread of the disease. That’s the view of FairPlay founder Francois Baird who has called on the government to re-evaluate its compensation policy and provide financial support to poultry farmers who abided by the law and culled their chickens according to state directives during bird flu outbreaks.

The build-up of inventory and resultant pressure to chase sales is the dominant theme amongst the major urea producers around the world. The seasonal lull in demand means that there are very few buyers experiencing any urgency to make purchases and this is leaving sellers feeling the heat. The handful of producers that tested the markets this week quickly found that the prices needed to conclude deals were even lower than they feared. READ MORE

Sanifruit, in its sixth active season in South Africa, has moved beyond packhouses in the Eastern Cape to Limpopo and Mpumalanga to help packhouses with some of their pain points: on the one hand, a resistance building to decades-old chemicals and on the other, a steady reduction in the allowed active ingredients and the allowed quantities thereof."

Since we are looking at an El Niño possibility this coming season, I thought sharing this chart that illustrates the El Niño impact globally might be helpful. For South Africa, the expected weather changes would be a shift from a prolonged period of La Niña to El Niño.
