South Africa’s fuel prices are set for minor adjustments effective 1 October 2025, as per the Central Energy Fund’s month-end data. Petrol 93 is expected to decrease by 3 cents per litre due to a slight over-recovery, while Petrol 95 faces a 4-cent per litre increase due to a small under-recovery. Diesel prices will see reductions of 8 to 11 cents per litre, and illuminating paraffin will drop by 12 cents per litre. The stronger rand and narrowing global petrol and diesel price gaps have driven these over-recoveries, despite volatile oil prices. Brent crude, steady at around $69 per barrel, rose 4% this week amid U.S. pressure on Russian energy buyers and Ukrainian strikes on Russian infrastructure.

Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau expressed optimism about extending the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), set to expire in September 2025, which provides duty-free access to the U.S. market for key South African exports like vehicles, citrus, and wine. Speaking to Bloomberg Television in New York on 23 September 2025, Tau emphasized ongoing lobbying efforts with the U.S. administration and Congress, noting positive sentiment for an extension. However, President Donald Trump’s trade policies, including a 30% tariff on South African imports, threaten AGOA’s benefits and could disrupt sales to the U.S., South Africa’s second-largest trading partner after China.

South Africa is one of the worst affected countries globally, and the tariffs come at a time when the South African economy continues to stagnate, and doesn’t have any jobs to spare. The South African government has scrambled to negotiate with the White House, but has largely been ignored, with their proposals being deemed ‘not ambitious enough’. Although recent reporting suggests that a breakthrough might be imminent, I’ll believe it when I see it.  READ MORE

This precision is critical. Overuse of fertilizer wastes money and increases greenhouse gases, while underuse limits yields. Getting the balance right improves farm efficiency and protects ecosystems. With fertilizer shortages, soil degradation accelerating and climate concerns mounting, there is an urgent need for practical solutions that can be deployed quickly and affordably. READ MORE

NEWS  COMMENTARY-
The Mpumalanga Legislature’s resolution to rename Kruger National Park to Skukuza National Park, proposed by the EFF and supported by the ANC and MK Party, seeks to honor African heritage by distancing the park from Paul Kruger, a polarizing apartheid-era figure. The name “Skukuza” celebrates James Stevenson-Hamilton, the park’s first warden, nicknamed by the Tsonga for his anti-poaching zeal. Yet, the move, while symbolic, has no legal weight, as the DA points out, warning of damage to the park’s globally recognized brand, vital to South Africa’s tourism sector (11.1% income growth, July 2025, Stats SA). Expert Elmarie Slabbert flags risks of confusing international visitors, threatening economic stability. Background: Kruger, established in 1898, is a global conservation icon, hosting 2 million visitors annually. Decolonization efforts, like renaming, reflect post-apartheid South Africa’s push to reclaim African identity, but critics argue economic priorities must not be sidelined. This debate pits cultural redress against tourism’s economic lifeline. —
