But the sharply higher fuel and fertiliser prices are an even more pressing challenge as the season starts in the Western Cape and proceeds to other provinces over the coming two months.

Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen has been strongly criticised for alleged delay tactics in the rollout of the Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination programme. On 28 April 2026, farmer organisations (Sakeliga, SAAI, and Free State Agriculture) told the High Court that the Minister and his department were obstructing private procurement and administration of FMD vaccines.

Gen Z readily spends $7 daily on specialty oat milk lattes, contributing to a $48 billion industry, but hesitates to spend $15 on a bottle of wine. The wine industry has been concerned about declining consumption among young people, but the real issue is not price sensitivity or anti-alcohol sentiment.Gen Z understands quality, origin, single-origin, and small-batch concepts from the coffee world, which communicates craft, farmer stories, and process in an inviting and accessible way. In contrast, wine often feels elitist, using critic scores and foreign region names that create a sense of exclusion. The irony is that wine offers far better value: a $20 bottle provides multiple shared glasses, enhances meals and social connection, and creates memorable experiences — far more than a quickly consumed $7 latte. Yet wine has lost the marketing battle by making expertise feel like a barrier rather than something welcoming. The author argues that Gen Z will pay for quality when it is explained inclusively. The piece suggests that the sweet spot for good value in wine lies in the $15–$25 range, rather than ultra-cheap options.

An El Niño event is expected to develop from mid-2026, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Sea-surface temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific are rising rapidly, with forecasts indicating a likely return of El Niño conditions as early as May–July 2026.El Niño typically brings warmer global temperatures and shifts in rainfall patterns. This includes increased chances of heatwaves, heavy rainfall in parts of southern South America, the southern United States, the Horn of Africa, and central Asia, while drier conditions are likely over Australia, Indonesia, and parts of southern Asia.During the boreal summer, there may be more hurricanes in the central and eastern Pacific, but fewer in the Atlantic.WMO notes that it does not use the term “super El Niño,” as it is not part of its standardized classifications. A full El Niño Update will be released in late May, after the so-called “spring predictability barrier.”

Fertilizer prices
Here is a simple breakdown of current fertilizer prices in South Africa as of early May 2026:Urea (46%) is trading between R9,800 and R10,800 per ton and is stable to slightly cheaper. LAN (28%) is selling for R7,800 to R8,600 per ton and remains steady. Ammonium Sulphate (21%) is one of the more affordable options at R6,200 to R6,900 per ton.Phosphate fertilizers are firmer, with MAP ranging from R13,500 to R14,800 per ton and DAP between R14,200 and R15,500 per ton. Potassium Chloride (KCL) is trading at R11,500 to R12,800 per ton, while Potassium Sulphate costs around R13,800 to R15,200 per ton. Compound fertilizers such as 3:2:1, 4:3:4 and 5:2:2 generally fall between R11,000 and R14,500 per ton, depending on the exact formula.Overall, prices have been fairly stable during the past month. Nitrogen products like Urea and LAN have softened a bit because international oil and gas prices are lower. Phosphate products remain stronger due to global supply issues. Keep in mind that the final price on the farm can be R300 to R800 per ton higher depending on where you are located and how far the product has to be transported. Many farmers are currently buying smaller amounts and waiting to see if prices drop further before the main planting season begins.
