This week brings several major themes moving agricultural markets in different directions. In the grain market, South Africa has a record maize crop while US prices are moving lower, yet local maize prices remain relatively firm. A weaker rand is helping to offset some of the international pressure, but the question is how long that support can last.
While peatlands make up only 3% of the Earth's land surface (>500 million hectares), they store approximately twice the amount of carbon compared to the combined biomass of all the world's forests. Peatlands are distributed along coasts worldwide, in saltmarshes and saline reedbeds, and the tropics often in mangroves.
