Stats SA published the latest GDP data , showing that South Africa’s economy grew at a sluggish o.8% in 2018; however, according to economist Maarten Ackerman, the Q4 numbers are encouraging in light of the tough environment that the country has just emerged from.

As the backbone of developing economies, agriculture not only serves to feed a nation but creates employment and, often, contributes significantly to the GDP.

The Agriculture sector is arguably the most important section of any economy as this chunk of the economy is involved in the cultivation of crops and the rearing of livestock for both commercial and domestic purposes.

GDP fell more than expected in the fourth quarter, marking the sharpest contraction since the third quarter of 2021 during the height of the pandemic, reflecting the effect of load-shedding on the economy.

Transport, trade and government services also contributed to the slowdown, which saw GDP falling 0.3% in the third quarter and effectively undoing the 0.3% growth seen in the second quarter.
