Excessive rainfall in South Africa increases the risk of livestock diseases such as Rift Valley fever, Heartwater, and bluetongue, particularly in regions like the Karoo. While vaccines exist, smallholder farmers often struggle with access. Recent rains have improved grazing veld, reducing feed costs, but erratic weather patterns heighten the frequency of animal and crop diseases. To address this, South Africa must invest in research, revitalize state-owned vaccine manufacturer Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP), and streamline regulations for vaccine registration. Strengthening biosecurity is critical for sustaining South Africa’s livestock sector, which accounts for half of the country’s agricultural economy, and for maintaining access to export markets for red meat, wool, and other livestock products. Key organizations like the Red Meat Industry Services and the South African Poultry Association are working with the government to drive these efforts.

Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil and you're a thousand miles from the cornfield! -Dwight Eisenhower. The agricultural G20 in Durban has not lived up to the expectations of farmers. To the contrary, it is quite a disappointment. It has taken the global debate on agriculture at least seven steps back. Both the topics on the program and the contents were very similar to that of COP24, which was held in 2018 in Katowice, Poland. At this event, farmers from six continents forcefully stepped forward to object against the tone and the unrealistic content of the deliberations on agriculture and climate change. CRA MEDIA - Actions speak louder than words. So, focus on winning through your actions rather than trying to win an argument. You need to think long-term if you want to maintain power. Consider all the possible outcomes of your actions and plan accordingly. Don’t accept things that people give to you for free. People will think they have power over you if you do. Stroopwerk word bemoeilik omdat stropers in modderige landerye vasval.

Our VIEWPOINT of the Weekend.

According to the US Department of Agriculture’s Grain Transportation Report (GTR), US grain exports in the 2024-25 marketing year have remained robust despite a significant decline in exports to China, driven by competitive pricing and strong global demand. Key points include:

Africa holds 60% of the world’s untapped arable land, offering immense potential to feed its growing population and become a global agricultural leader. Healthy soils, akin to renewable energy sources, are vital for carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and climate resilience.

Global asparagus markets in 2025 are shaped by weather-related supply fluctuations, varying demand, and regional production dynamics across North America, Europe, and South Africa. Key highlights include:

Africa holds 60% of the world’s untapped arable land, offering potential to become a global breadbasket while addressing food security, economic growth, and climate resilience. Healthy soils, likened to renewable energy sources, sequester carbon, boost biodiversity, and enhance climate adaptation. However, challenges like degraded soils, low fertilizer use (18kg/ha in Sub-Saharan Africa, 13% of global average), inadequate agronomic advice, and limited local fertilizer production hinder progress.
