South Africa’s food inflation surprised on the downside again, easing to just 3.9% y/y in October 2025 — the lowest since early 2021 — down from 4.4% in September and a 2025 peak of 5.5% in July. Month-on-month, food prices remained in deflation (-0.1%) for the third straight month. The slowdown was driven mainly by vegetables (sharp drops in potatoes -30.9% y/y and onions -4.5% y/y), fruits & nuts, sugar products, and meat (which cooled to 11.4% y/y from recent double-digit surges as local supply improved and consumer demand stayed constrained).

The 2025 G20 Leaders’ Declaration places agriculture at the heart of global food security, committing to open, non-discriminatory trade under WTO rules and calling for resilient food systems through innovation, sustainable technologies, reduced waste, better land and water management, and investment in smallholder and family farmers — with special emphasis on women and youth.South Africa’s organised agriculture welcomes this as a clear endorsement of its export-oriented, science-based approach: advanced seeds, improved genetics, and the safe, balanced use of agrochemicals and fertilisers rather than blanket bans. The Declaration’s focus on evidence-driven solutions over political rhetoric directly validates SA’s long-standing stance.Beyond trade, the G20 spotlight on African poverty highlights that unlocking the continent’s agrarian potential demands commercial-scale production alongside smallholder support, better land governance, technology adoption, open markets, minimal interference, and infrastructure investment — lessons drawn straight from South Africa’s own success story.

Why are American vineyards in crisis now, and how will this impact the U.S. wine industry, valued at $325 billion? The main reason U.S. vineyards are in crisis boils down to an oversupply of wine in the market and in winery inventories, caused by a variety of factors.  READ MORE -

Rice farming, for example, contributes 8% of the world’s carbon emissions, due to how farmers flood rice fields, Skinner added.  The water in these rice fields creates a low-oxygen environment which kills most weeds and keeps pests away. But the anaerobic conditions cause microorganisms to produce and release methane, a greenhouse gas. READ MORE

NEWS  COMMENTARY- DR FAFFA
With world leaders and delegations from more than 40 countries, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, President Cyril Ramaphosa had open the summit at 10:00 on the 22 November 2025 and highlight debt, inequality, and climate financing as the core agenda items.Africa’s debt burden is crushing: more than half of the continent’s countries now spend more on interest payments than on education or health, with $89 billion in debt-service payments due in 2025 alone. While Guterres and Ramaphosa are pushing for reforms — such as cheaper capital, debt cancellations for climate disasters, and an International Inequality Panel — the reality remains mixed. Africa’s share of global exports has fallen from 8% in 1960 to just 4%, due in part to internal issues like corruption, poor investment decisions, and lack of value addition (e.g., Nigeria exporting almost all its tomatoes raw). The G20 proposals include debt relief, green-energy transitions, and increased private investment, but without Africa’s own reforms (such as land registration and better financial access for farmers), these measures will remain largely symbolic.Ramaphosa warns against unilateral actions like US tariffs, while Guterres says: “We will see whether the G20 truly prioritises developing countries.” The summit could provide momentum for Africa’s growth, but accountability starts at home: without transparent governance and diversification, debt cancellations will only be temporary. The time to act is now — or the cycle will simply repeat itself. Corruption is part of Africa and it incompetent so called "leaders" And if you look at all the delicates and the ANC followers attending with food and drink on the house it has been a very successful gathering and we hope that all the promises will get into action.

WATCH OUT- NEW program on the way - exclusive to CRA MEDIA and the FARMERS of South Africa - 2025

Local Prices (ex-warehouse, 20 Nov vs 13 Nov) Urea gran: ↑3.6% to R8,301/t (N-cost ↑R18.05/kg)
MAP: ↑1.0% to R13,381/t (P-cost ↑R50.20/kg)
KCl gran: ↑1.0% to R6,881/t (K-cost ↑R13.76/kg)

Nitrogen is stabilising while phosphate and potash drift lower.Global Trends Urea strengthened slightly but the latest Indian tender closed at a disappointing $418/t CFR (well below the expected $430+). Early signs point to only ~1 million tons accepted, leaving the market oversupplied and capping further upside. Middle East prices rose to low-$420s despite the weak tender. Brazil and Europe are quiet; Egypt fell to ~$480/t ahead of CBAM in 2026.
Phosphates remain weak: US prices dropped >$50/t after tariff removals; India DAP broke below $700/t CFR; MAP steady just under $650/t CFR Brazil. Local Foskor MAP cut again to ~R11,600/t ex-Richards Bay.
Potash very quiet globally; Brazil flat at $350/t CFR, Durban benchmark unchanged at $365/t CFR.

Other Highlights Ammonia keeps climbing (Asia upper-$400s, Americas/Europe $650–700/t CFR) on plant outages.
Ammonium sulphate: granular stable, crystalline up short-term on Chinese cutbacks.
Oil below $63/bbl and European gas <$11/MMBtu keep energy-related costs soft.
Rand weakened ~1% to R17.20, giving slight import-parity support.

Outlook
Urea forward swaps now price Dec/Jan below $400/t – very pessimistic given peak Northern Hemisphere demand ahead. Phosphates still have downside risk as buyers hold off. Potash expected to stay flat into 2026. Overall, nitrogen looks range-bound while P and K remain under gentle downward pressure.
