The Citrus Growers’ Association of Southern Africa has asked the government for an urgent update on its interventions to stop the EU requiring refrigeration of oranges, which it says will leave some farmers without a livelihood. New false codling moth regulations passed in June 2022 require mandatory cold treatment of SA oranges entering EU markets. Oranges must be kept at temperatures of 2°C or lower for 25 days adding to farmers' costs.

The data released by Statistics South Africa this week shows that consumer food price increases accelerated by 14,4% in March 2023 from 14,0% in the previous month. The food product prices that increased notably were milk, eggs, and cheese; fruit; vegetables; and sugar, sweets and desserts.  We expect consumer food price increases to remain sticky at relatively higher levels for the coming month, which will likely be a peak.

Despite serious allegations that two of his Cabinet members are implicated in rampant corruption at Eskom, President Cyril Ramaphosa says he sees no need to receive a briefing about it from his national security advisor, Sydney Mufamadi, or Minister Pravin Gordhan - Eskom’s shareholder representative.  Instead, Ramaphosa believes that, in line with the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act (PRECCA), a person in a position of power, such as former Eskom CEO André de Ruyter who made the allegations, had a duty to report any corrupt activity to law enforcement officials.

Sewe weke nadat dr.

State-owned Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) says it has started handling citrus exports at the Durban and Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) container terminals for the season. The season posed many challenges for South African farmers and, to this end, the container terminals will be open over a 24-hour period and have dedicated lanes prioritising refrigerated containers at the gates.

For decades, South African farmers have bred the king of beasts as a commodity. Many of the country’s 300 or so farms, which hold 10,000 or more captive lions, are geared to tourists who want to get close to the animals—even walk with them or pet cubs. Some farmers charge trophy hunters thousands of dollars for the guaranteed opportunity to shoot a lion for its head, skin, teeth, or claws. READ MORE

The mood in the global Urea market returned to pessimism over prices after last week’s flurry of purchasing in the US caused some excitement. It is now evident that the American purchasing was prompted by unexpected restrictions in the Mississippi River (the main conduit for imported urea to reach the US corn belt). READ MORE

There is no doubt that South Africa needs a new Expropriation Act. It is important to note that the Expropriation Bill is merely a procedural bill, it grants no powers of expropriation to anyone other than the minister of public works and infrastructure and only for purposes connected to his/her mandate.

Johann Pretorius.

Women in agriculture deserves recognition. These women are in most cases graduated or with some form of post-school tertiary qualification and a leader in hear community, church, at the local school, clinic and plays a role in keeping the daily activities on the farm, running.A Women who forms part of the decision making on the farm, support her husband to adapt to the changes in weather, government rules, managing the finances of the farm as a business.A Women who offers an input before agricultural meetings and conferences. This Women has a direct input in the management of the farm and allows her husband to be a farmer and allows him to farm. A Women without a platform to raise her own voice. The reality is that men as farmers compete in competitions, wins luxury vehicles and invited to international agricultural trade and study tours, but never such an opportunity for women in agriculture.

Agriculture contributes about 17% of global greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, according to the United Nations. And while the sector is a key contributor to climate change, it is also vulnerable to its effects — with climate-related impacts such as droughts, flooding and longer fire seasons posing increasingly serious challenges to farmers and ranchers around the world.

With climate change intensifying and animal diseases likely to become more prevalent, the Department of Agriculture should consider earmarking part of their annual budget to deal with outbreaks, says Wandile Sihlobo, chief economist at the Agricultural Business Chamber.
