The Heartbeat of Farming and Agri News.

Botswana has imposed yet another ban on agricultural imports from SA, this time on oranges. Effective from June 17 to the end of August, the temporary ban has been enforced by Botswana’s agriculture ministry to support local farmers and stabilise the market. The move is part of a broader strategy aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in food production, a goal that has seen Botswana extend and expand restrictions on various fresh produce imports until the end of 2025. Their ministry urged businesses to source oranges locally from the Tuli Block, emphasising the importance of sustaining Botswana’s agricultural sector. Authorities have been tasked with closely monitoring the production situation to ensure the initiative’s success. This ban on SA oranges is not an isolated incident; it follows a series of restrictions that include vegetables such as sweet potatoes and mushrooms.

The production prospects for 2024/25 global soybeans are also positive, estimated at 415-million tonnes, up by 6% year-on-year. This is based on the expected large harvest in the US, Brazil, Argentina, India, and Paraguay.  A less optimistic view is in the major grains such as wheat and maize, though their supplies will still remain at levels above average. For example, the IGC forecasts the 2024/25 global wheat production at 793-million tonnes, slightly lower than the 2023/24 season's crop of 804-million tonnes. This is due to the expected production declines in the EU, UK, Ukraine and Russia. These overly wet weather conditions in these countries during the season are the reason for the anticipated poor yields. With food and industrial use of wheat expected to remain strong, the IGC placed the 2024/25 global wheat stocks at 261-million tonnes, down 3% year-on-year.

As South Africa’s lemon export season draws to a close, the Citrus Growers’ Association (CGA) has adjusted projections for 2024 downwards. This has emerged from a review of estimates conducted by the CGA’s Lemon Focus Group. At the end of July, the CGA also adjusted orange export estimates down, for both navels and Valencias.

ZESCO has started to import electricity from South Africa’s national utility company ESCOM as part of government’s plan to address current power shortages caused by the ongoing drought. From August 1, ZESCO is importing 218 megawatts of electricity during off-peak consumption hours - enough to power 141,700 homes.
Skyrocketing potato prices seen at the end of 2023 could become the new reality if water usage restrictions are imposed on farmers in the Western Cape's Sandveld region. The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has proposed a water reserve determination for the F60 and G30 catchments in the Berg-Olifants water management area in the Western Cape.
The South African rand may be the official currency of South Africa, but it is used as legal tender in three other countries.South Africa is a member of the Common Monetary Area (CMA), which includes Nambia, Lesotho, and Eswatini. The CMA is a monetary union. Although each of these countries issues its currency, all four currencies are governed by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).
Botswana has imposed yet another ban on agricultural imports from SA, this time on oranges.Effective from June 17 to the end of August, the temporary ban has been enforced by Botswana’s agriculture ministry to support local farmers and stabilise the market.
LW
