–   South Africa has the expertise, research capacity, industry experience and financial resources to strengthen its red meat value chain. The challenge is connecting these capabilities and turning shared knowledge into coordinated action.

This was the central message emerging from the Agri X Fusion Red Meat Value Chain Collaboration Summit, held in Pretoria on 20–21 October 2026, where more than 30 speakers and contributors from government, industry, academia, research and finance explored opportunities to address shared challenges and unlock new economic potential.

Unlike traditional industry conferences, the Summit was designed to move beyond discussion by connecting knowledge, expertise and resources across the red meat value chain.   Its purpose was to identify shared priorities, build relationships and create opportunities for practical collaboration that could strengthen the industry's competitiveness, inclusivity and long-term sustainability..

BRINGING DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES TOGETHER

The first day featured four panel discussions exploring the challenges, opportunities and interdependencies across the red meat value chain.

These discussions brought together perspectives from agricultural economics, animal health and biosecurity, production and sustainability, market access, technology, research, financing and enterprise development.

The participation of Minister of Agriculture Willie Aucamp, through a recorded address, together with contributions from industry leaders, academic institutions, researchers, financial institutions and agricultural organisations, reinforced the importance of aligning resources and capabilities to address shared challenges.

A recurring message was that many of the solutions and capabilities required already exist. The challenge is to connect them more effectively, remove barriers to collaboration and accelerate their practical application.

Day two shifted the focus from discussion to to potential implementation, giving participants the opportunities to connect directly, identify shared interests and expore initiatives that could be developed into practical partnerships beyond the Summit.

The intention was never to resolve every challenge within two days, but rather to establish relationships, identify priorities and initiate a process through which collaboration can deliver measurable results.

TEN KEY INSIGHTS AND OPPORTUNIITIES FROM THE SUMMIT

The Summit highlighted ten interconnected priorities that could contribute to a more competitive, resilient, inclusive and sustainable red meat value chain.

  1. Biosecurity is a national economic priority. Effective disease prevention and control require coordinated action, reliable surveillance, animal identification, movement management and clear accountability across government and industry. A One Health approach recognises that animal health, human health and environmental sustainability are interconnected.
  2. Export growth requires a coordinated industry approach. South Africa has opportunities to expand its presence in international red meat markets, but success depends on stronger alignment between animal health, traceability, quality standards, processing capacity, market intelligence and export promotion. The industry must compete as an integrated value chain.
  3. Sustainability must be economically viable and financeable. Environmental resilience, resource efficiency and commercial profitability are increasingly interconnected. Reliable information and measurable performance can reduce investment uncertainty, improve access to finance and strengthen long-term agricultural competitiveness.
  4. Research must translate into practical and commercial solutions. South Africa has significant scientific expertise, research capacity and innovation potential. Greater collaboration between academia, research institutions, industry and investors is needed to identify relevant challenges, accelerate technology development and bring commercially viable solutions to market.
  5. Digital connectivity and trusted data can transform agriculture. Integrated information systems, livestock monitoring, traceability and digital technologies offer opportunities to improve productivity, animal health, risk management and decision-making. The challenge is to connect existing technologies and information into practical, accessible solutions.
  6. Competitiveness depends on collaboration and implementation. Many of the strategies, capabilities and resources required to strengthen the industry already exist. Greater impact will come from aligning these resources, improving coordination and establishing accountable partnerships that deliver measurable results.
  7. Sustainable livestock management can create environmental and financial value. Appropriate grazing management and regenerative agricultural practices can improve land productivity and environmental resilience. Credible carbon programmes and other environmental markets may provide additional opportunities for producers to benefit financially from sustainable practices.
  8. Intellectual property should enable innovation and commercialisation. Clear and practical arrangements governing research partnerships, intellectual property, licensing and technology transfer can accelerate the application of research and attract private-sector investment in agricultural innovation.
  9. Inclusive growth requires productive and commercially viable farming enterprises. Land access alone is insufficient. Successful agricultural development requires producer readiness, infrastructure, skills, coordinated support, access to finance and integration into functioning markets and value chains.
  10. The red meat value chain must become more integrated and investable. Greater collaboration between producers, processors, financial institutions, researchers, technology providers and markets can improve efficiency, unlock investment and create opportunities for broader economic participation.

The  full ten insights and supporting perspectives are reflected in nine articles available through the Agri X Fusion Insights platform, providing a foundation for continued industry engagement and collaboration.

 TURNING INSIGHTS INTO ACTION

The Summit confirmed the value of creating a neutral platform where organisations with different mandates, capabilities and interests can identify opportunities to work together.

Building on the insights and relationships established during the Summit, Agri X Fusion will move from convening stakeholders to facilitating focused collaboration. Working with  interested partners, the platform will help identify practical initiatives, explore opportunities for joint implementation and establish ways to measure progress.

These priorities will guide Agri X Fusion's initial focus on four connected opportunities for collaboration::

  • Biosecurity and One Health: Strengthening animal health, disease prevention and biosecurity requires coordinated action between government, producers, researchers and industry. Reliable surveillance, animal identification, movement management and clear accountability are essential to protecting livestock production, strengthening market confidence and supporting public health.
  • Traceability, data and innovation: South Africa already has considerable research expertise, technological capabilities and digital solutions. The opportunity lies in connecting these resources, improving access to reliable information and accelerating the practical application and commercialisation of research. Trusted traceability systems, digital technologies and effective intellectual property arrangements can strengthen productivity, risk management and market access..
  • Markets, exports and sustainable production: Expanding South Africa's participation in international red meat markets requires a more integrated and competitive value chain. Improved coordination across production, processing, quality standards, export promotion and market intelligence must be supported by sustainable livestock management practices that improve resource efficiency and environmental resilience.
  • Finance, inclusion and implementation: Long-term growth depends on commercially viable farming enterprises, access to finance, infrastructure, skills and stronger integration between emerging producers and established markets. Reliable data, measurable performance and coordinated partnerships can reduce investment uncertainty, support innovation and create opportunities for broader economic participation.

These priorities will guide continued engagement with interested organisations, with the aim of developing practical initiatives, identifying implementation partners and establishing measurable outcomes as opportunities progress.

THE REAL TEST LIES AHEAD

“The real test of this Summit will not be what we agree on here, but what we are prepared to do afterwards,” said Koos Nel of Agri X.

“Bringing people together is an important first step, but the real value lies in what happens next. Through Agri X Fusion, we aim to connect people, knowledge and capabilities, facilitate meaningful partnerships and turn shared opportunities into practical, measurable outcomes.

We invite organisations and individuals who share this vision to engage with us, contribute their expertise and capabilities, and become part of the collaborative journey towards a more connected, inclusive and competitive red meat value chain.”

The Summit marks an important step in Agri X Fusion's continued efforts to connect knowledge, industry expertise and investment opportunities across South Africa's agricultural value chains.

Further collaboration initiatives and industry engagements are planned for 2027, building on the relationships and priorities established during the Summit.

The measure of success will not be the number of conversations held, but the partnerships formed and the practical progress achieved.
