South Africa’s economic growth is stagnating due to multiple systemic issues, despite a 15.8% growth in agricultural Gross Value Added (GVA) in Q1 2025, which contributed 0.4 percentage points to the national GDP growth of 0.1%. However, agriculture’s volatility, driven by factors like weather, electricity, and transportation, limits its reliability as a growth driver. Critical infrastructure, including electricity (e.g., loadshedding), water, and transport (rail, ports, roads), has deteriorated significantly. Loadshedding alone may have reduced potential GDP growth by up to 3%, while Transnet’s inefficiencies, with a R136 billion debt, cost the economy over R1 billion daily. Restoring infrastructure requires an estimated R150 billion annually for repairs and R200 billion for rail restoration.

The National Livestock Farmers' Association of South Africa (NaLFA-SA) warned that farmers failing to update their insurers about business changes risk denied insurance claims, which could harm food production, employment, and the national economy. This follows a statement from Western National Insurance, highlighting a growing issue where farmers neglect to report operational changes, creating a “critical blind spot” in the farming industry.  Western National Insurance’s underwriting head, Jan-Hendrik Botha, noted that undisclosed changes, such as leasing land, entering joint ventures, installing solar panels, building cold storage, or switching to high-value crops (e.g., berries or nuts), alter a farm’s risk profile. These unreported changes can invalidate insurance policies, leading to denied claims.
