South Africa’s G20 presidency (December 2024–November 2025) offers a critical platform for African countries to elevate agriculture in global discussions on development, climate adaptation, and trade. Despite holding 64% of the world’s arable land and a youthful workforce, Africa faces rising food insecurity, with undernourishment increasing from 16% in 2015 to 20.4% in 2023, driven by extreme weather, conflicts, and high food prices. The G20’s focus on socioeconomic development, food security, and AI aligns with Africa’s agricultural priorities. Opportunities include leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and fourth industrial revolution technologies like AI and precision farming to boost productivity and intra-African trade. Challenges such as digital infrastructure, skills gaps, and financing must be addressed to ensure smallholder farmers benefit. Public-private partnerships and targeted investments of $52bn annually could reduce undernourishment significantly by 2030.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in livestock, recently detected at Karan Beef’s Heidelberg feedlot and some dairy farms, poses no risk to human health through contact or consumption of animal products, according to local and international experts. FMD is distinct from hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), affecting only cloven-hoofed animals like cattle and pigs, not humans or other animals. Humans can indirectly spread FMD via contaminated clothing or equipment. South Africa’s formal food sector maintains high safety standards, with export-approved abattoirs and strict dairy processing protocols, including double pasteurisation or UHT treatment to prevent FMD transmission to animals. Milk from quarantined farms requires a Red Cross permit and traceability. These measures protect livestock, not humans, as FMD is not zoonotic. Consumers buying from reputable sources are assured safe red meat and dairy products.

A one-ounce, stocky blur of blue that warbles a melodious song, rarely strays far from its breeding area, enjoys foraging from a perch, and loves to sleep in a nest of twigs in pre-existing cavities may not seem like an excellent candidate for the annihilation of one’s foes. READ MORE

There is no doubt about the original owners of land in South Africa. They were the Bushmen, who have lived here, all over South Africa, for at least 100,000 years. They had never met any other people and so had no name for themselves. The first whites in the Cape had no idea of their history in the rest of South Africa but saw these hunter-gatherers living in the bush and so called them “Bushmen” READ MORE

Maize demand in the Southern African region is expected to remain strong in the 2025-26 marketing year, which commenced in May (this marketing year corresponds with the 2024-25 production season). Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.

Global production forecast for 2025-26 at a record 808 million tonnes (+1%), driven by strong harvests in the EU, Russia, Canada, Argentina, UK, and India. Consumption remains high for food, feed, and industrial use, leading to slightly tight stocks at 262 million tonnes (-0.5%). Wheat prices may stay low due to recent pressure. Global harvest projected at 1.3 billion tonnes (+3%), with robust production in the US, Brazil, Argentina, Ukraine, China, EU, India, and Russia. Increased consumption for industrial, feed, and food use will reduce stocks by 3% to 275 million tonnes, potentially stabilizing or slightly raising maize prices.
South Africa’s citrus industry, a vital economic driver, is grappling with significant trade challenges as it enters the 2025 shipping season. A proposed 30% retaliatory tariff on citrus exports to the U.S., set to potentially take effect after July 9, 2025, threatens to disrupt a key market.

South Africa has a major contaminated diesel problem, part of a wider illicit fuel industry that costs the fiscus around R3.6 billion annually.

South Africa has finalized a special, year-long trade agreement with the United States to ensure continued chicken imports despite Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) cases in the U.S.
South African pears have established a stable presence in China, filling the gap during the domestic pear off-season (spring/summer). Shanghai Shengguo Trading Co. Ltd., a key importer, highlights their success due to diverse varieties and consistent supply.

South Africa’s petrol prices have increased by R17 over the past two decades, as the government repeatedly increased the levies placed on fuel and the rand steadily weakened. In 2004, South Africans were paying around R4 per litre of 95 octane petrol, whereas motorists now pay R21.35 per litre as of June 2025.

Agriculture is one of the most vital sectors in the South African economy, both in terms of meeting the needs of a highly food-insecure nation and as a major contributor to the economy. Close to 20% of the South African population is food insecure. Yet, the country grows more than enough food, and millions of tons end up as food waste.

The Great Wildebeest Migration, the second-largest overland migration globally, involves 1.4–2.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and other species traveling 800+ km annually across Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve in a clockwise loop, driven by rainfall and the search for food and water.
