Fuel prices rise again from Wednesday 3 December: diesel +61c/l and petrol +26c/l, hitting farmers hard during summer planting and winter harvest. Fuel accounts for 13% of grain costs and 75% of grain/oilseeds travel by road, so logistics costs will spike. After two months of relief (Oct & Nov cuts of 33–57c), the new increase will squeeze already thin margins.Factory farming costs humanity 1.8 healthy years per person through antibiotic resistance, toxic air pollution and meat-related diseases, drives 30% of global emissions, pollutes 25% of freshwater and condemns 76 billion animals a year to lives as short as 35 days.South Africa smashed its soybean record with 2.771 million tonnes in 2024/25 (+50% y/y), turning the country from heavy importer to confident net exporter, powered by doubled poultry demand, expanded crushing capacity and 95% GM seed adoption.

Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.

TLU SA has reacted with horror and deep grief to the brutal farm murder of At Mahne (77) and the savage attack on his wife Pietro (74) on their farm near Baltimore, Limpopo. The union describes the incident as yet another shocking example of the government’s persistent refusal to protect farmers and recognise farm attacks as priority crimes.

Suid-Afrika se bek-en-klouseer-uitbreking hou steeds plaaslike 'n risiko in. .

Braaibroodjie Index Update: The price of a braaibroodjie is R21.46 as on 30 Nov 2025. Good news is that the price of a braaibroodjie came down by nearly 20c the last 2 months. Half of that drop came from a -17% decline in onion prices in November! The average per kg price of onions fell from R21.99 in Oct to R18.32 in Nov.

The expected increase in fuel prices in December comes at a busy time for South Africa's agriculture, as we continue summer grain and oilseed plantings. The diesel price (0.05% wholesale inland) could increase by 61 cents per litre, while the petrol price (95 ULP inland) could increase by 26 cents per litre.

BRICS remains a loose, informal grouping with no sound economic or trade approach that keeps the countries together. In fact, when one considers intra-BRICS trade, it quickly becomes clear that little is happening in the grouping beyond political matters, with China again being an exception for many countries on trade.

We continue to receive encouraging notes about the prospects of La Niña in the 2025-26 summer season. The La Niña-induced rains will help support field crops, horticulture, and grazing veld for livestock. The farmers are optimistic and plan to increase area plantings, primarily of field crops.

South Africa’s wheat farmers have delivered 960,378 tonnes to silos since October 2025 – roughly 47% of the expected 2.03 million tonne harvest (+5% y/y). Progress is solid, but wet weather means harvesting will spill into early January 2026 in some areas.

Africa possesses immense agricultural potential, boasting nearly half of the world’s arable land and a climate ideal for global food production. Despite these natural advantages, its share of global agricultural exports is shockingly low.

South Africa's fruit and vegetable export performance strengthened in the first three quarters of 2025, reaching US$11.7 billion in total agricultural export revenue, with fresh produce accounting for the bulk of outbound trade. Overall exports increased 10 per cent year on year.
