Short Summary - Headline News The foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) crisis in South Africa has deepened further, with Vrystaat Landbou (VL) confirming on Monday that it has begun consultations on legal action against Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen. VL is “extremely disappointed” in the minister’s handling of the outbreak and says he has never properly explained the constitutional or administrative-legal grounds for his prohibition on private importation of FMD vaccines

Meanwhile, fuel prices offer some relief from 4 February 2026: wholesale diesel (0.05% sulphur) drops 50c/litre and cleaner diesel (0.005% sulphur) 57c/litre, with coastal diesel at R17.08/litre and Gauteng at R17.91/litre. Paraffin falls to R11.08/litre at the coast and R12.10 in Gauteng. Only LPG rises (+31c/kg nationally, +36c/kg in the Western Cape)

.Experts warn that if FMD establishes itself in South Africa’s disease-free buffalo herds (especially on high-value private game farms and reserves), the impact on the wildlife/game farming industry would be severe, long-lasting, and potentially devastating. African buffalo are natural, long-term carriers of the FMD virus—they rarely show clear symptoms, roam large areas, form dynamic herds, and can shed the virus intermittently for years. Once infected, young calves lose maternal immunity and become new hosts, allowing indefinite circulation and creating a persistent reservoir that is extremely difficult to eradicate. Current WOAH and South African protocols would require complete herd depopulation, which is practically impossible in large reserves spanning tens of thousands of hectares.

Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP), South Africa’s only state-owned manufacturer of vaccines for animal diseases, received R492 million from the National Treasury more than a decade ago to upgrade its outdated facility to international Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) standards. The project, which began in 2012, remains incomplete more than 13 years later, the facility is not GMP-certified, and the matter has become a chronic embarrassment in the agriculture portfolio.

South Africa’s Department of Agriculture has made broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) status a primary criterion in allocating 2026 agricultural export quotas to the EU under the SADC-EU Economic Partnership Agreement, with quotas valued at more than R1 billion for products such as wine, sugar and processed fruit.

South Africa -Weeklikse Landbou Nuusoorsig - Weekly Agriculture News Summary 28th January 2026

WEER-

Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.

.South Africa does not produce enough wheat to meet domestic needs, mainly due to environmental limitations and historical shifts in farming profitability. Before the 1997-98 season, wheat plantings regularly exceeded 1 million hectares, supported by regulated markets and commodity boards that set stable prices.

For decades, Africa's agricultural mechanization has followed a flawed model: importing large, expensive tractors designed for flat, industrial-scale farming in other regions, assuming they would transform smallholder systems. The result has been widespread failure—idle machines, unavailable spare parts, maintenance costs exceeding farm incomes, and equipment abandoned after a few seasons.

A striking statistic shows that 77% of global farmland produces only 18% of the world's calories, highlighting major inefficiencies in modern agriculture. Livestock and dairy farming occupy the vast majority of agricultural land, yet plant-based foods—using just 23% of the space—supply 82% of global calories and 63% of protein.

Johan van den Berg, an independent specialist in agricultural meteorology, delivered a key scientific overview linking global climate trends to practical farming decisions in South Africa. He stressed that any 2026 weather outlook must incorporate long-term climate change and trends, not just seasonal forecasts.Global warming evidence —

Targeted lion poaching for body parts is no longer limited to remote national parks but is spreading to private game farms and hunting concessions across Africa. Experts warn that organised crime syndicates now view these private areas as easier and more profitable targets.

South Africa's ongoing foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak—active since 2019 and now widespread in multiple provinces—highlights deep failures in the Department of Agriculture's veterinary services, planning, and outbreak response.

Concise summary of the key carbon tax and related climate policy updates from South Africa's 2025 Budget cycle (as confirmed by National Treasury):Carbon Tax Rate IncreaseThe headline carbon tax rate rose from R190 to R236 per tonne of CO?e starting 1 January 2025 (a 24% increase).

South Africa’s Preservation and Development of Agricultural Land Bill has been finalised and is awaiting President Cyril Ramaphosa’s assent. The Bill aims to protect and develop agricultural land while using agro-ecological principles to restore degraded areas damaged by harmful farming practices.
