Media reports emphasize that Afrikaners, who constitute about 7% of South Africa’s population, remain among the most economically privileged groups, owning approximately 78% of private farmland and possessing wealth roughly 20 times that of Black South Africans. The South African media’s negative coverage of the Afrikaner “refugees” reflects a confluence of historical grievances, national pride, and economic anxieties. By framing the U.S. resettlement program as politically motivated and factually dubious, the media seeks to defend South Africa’s global image and counter narratives that could harm its agricultural export prospects. However, this focus risks overshadowing the sector’s structural challenges, such as the need for robust export strategies to offset a declining domestic market. As South Africa navigates these diplomatic and economic headwinds, the media’s role in shaping public perception will remain pivotal, but it must balance critique with constructive dialogue to support the country’s agricultural and economic resilience. We need to buildt and we can if we got Unity.
China has suspended all beef and related product imports from South Africa following ongoing foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks in Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal. The Red Meat Industry Services (RMIS) has expressed deep concern over the economic consequences of this ban, stressing the far-reaching effects on the red meat value chain, including producers, feedlots, abattoirs, and exporters. The suspension comes despite the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between South Africa and China in September 2024, which aimed to enhance bilateral trade, particularly with regard to FMD prevention and control. The MoU was designed to allow beef exports from provinces free of FMD, enabling regionalisation to prevent trade suspensions during outbreaks.

Canned lion hunting, a practice where lions bred in captivity are hunted in confined enclosures, has been a controversial yet lucrative industry in South Africa. For some farmers, it has been a pathway to significant wealth, capitalizing on the demand from wealthy trophy hunters, primarily from the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. However, the question remains: is canned lion hunting a "good" way of hunting? To answer this, we must examine its economic benefits, ethical implications, ecological impact, and the broader consequences for South Africa’s conservation and tourism reputation. READ MORE -
The current US baseline tariffs of 10% should be manageable for most countries, including Australia and New Zealand. Canada and Mexico are well-positioned, as most food and agricultural shipments to the US are tariff-free due to the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). READ MORE
Amid escalating trade tensions worldwide, the appropriate posture for South Africa's agriculture on trade is not to prefer one country over another, but to seek ways to multiply friendships and trade relations. China's recent public statements about its interest in deepening agricultural trade with South Africa should not be seen as an avenue to replace the US exports or other existing trading partners. Instead, this offers an opportunity to continue with export diversification. READ MORE
Africa, a continent of 54 nations, 1.5 billion people, and unparalleled diversity, holds immense potential to reshape the global landscape—if it can unite. A united Africa could leverage its vast resources, youthful population, and cultural richness to drive transformative change, but the path is fraught with challenges. READ MORE

Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.
