India has become the first country to develop genome-edited rice varieties, with two varieties launched by Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, developed by ICAR institutions. Cultivation on 5 million hectares could produce an additional 4.5 million tons of paddy, reducing production costs and increasing yields to meet the nutritional needs of India’s growing population.  Described as a historic milestone, these varieties support PM Narendra Modi’s Viksit Bharat vision and pave the way for a second Green Revolution through climate-resilient, high-yield agriculture.

While national agricultural plans like the Agriculture and Agro-processing Master Plan are crucial for setting a broad vision, their success hinges on translating these into provincial and regional strategies. Local government delivery is key, as farmers and stakeholders interact directly with local officials. The appointment of Bonginkosi Dayimani as head of agriculture in the Eastern Cape, announced by Premier Oscar Mabuyane, is seen as a positive step. Dayimani, a respected and experienced leader, faces the complex task of revitalizing agriculture, agro-processing, and agrotourism to address poverty and unemployment.  The people of the Eastern Cape must reclaim hope in farming, supported by government efforts to provide infrastructure and a conducive environment. Private investment will follow once tangible progress is evident.

Outstanding articles of the week. Summary of some news Headlines in the Farming and Agriculture media.

The recent tariff increases imposed/proposed (who really knows at this point) by US president Donald Trump on European wine imports have sent ripples through the world market, affecting pricing, demand, and overall trade flows. However, the impact extends beyond Europe. South African wine exports to the US have also been caught in the crossfire, now facing a 30% tariff hike. There is also the potential loss of South Africa’s preferential trade status under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) further threatens any edge in the US market it might have had. In the northern regions of South Africa, we had excellent rains, and perhaps excessive rains in certain areas. Rainy weather has cleared in these regions as the winter sets in and producers prepare for harvest. In the Western Cape, a winter crop region, the focus will be on whether the province can receive much-needed rains to support the 2025-26 winter crop production season in a similar way we saw with the summer crop regions of the country. To prevent structural failure, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) opened sluice gates on the Vaal Dam wall, releasing water downstream into the Vaal River at 1,881m³/s. While this response is in line with the dam’s flood management design, which allows it to hold up to 126% temporarily, it set off a chain reaction: overtopping riverbanks, flooding homes and businesses downstream, and raising questions about how prepared authorities are for the new normal of more frequent, intense rainfall. It was not long ago that farmers on the continent had to rely on birds like the Red-billed Quelea and African Cuckoo for rain predictions. Now, various types of technology are taking their place, equipping agricultural stakeholders with the tools they need to weather the proverbial storms. READ MORE

Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.

South Africa has about three million subsistence farmers who feed, on average, a family of five on less than five hectares. Almost 30 percent of South Africa's population are dependent on subsistence farming. Alpacas are alert, agile and territorial, and display instinctive guardian behaviour. They make excellent protectors of sheep flocks and, less commonly, goat herds Despite sorghum's nutritional value and climate resilience, South Africa's sorghum industry is declining due to weak consumer demand and failed initiatives. Sorghum planting dropped 75% from 1990-91 to 41,150 hectares in 2024-25, with production down 54% to 137,970 tonnes.

South Africa’s 2025 macadamia crop is estimated at 93,433 tons, a 7.11% increase from 2024. Market Challenges: Economic constraints in China, combined with growing Chinese macadamia production and existing stocks, have slowed early Nut in Shell (NIS) contracting, creating uncertainty for the marketing season.

In April 2025, South Africa's new vehicle sales reached 42,401 units, an 11.9% increase from 37,899 in April 2024, with year-to-date sales up 10.6% to 186,433, signaling a potential return to pre-Covid levels. New car sales grew 16.9% to 30,101, and bakkie/minibus sales improved, reflecting economic recovery.

In his welcoming remarks at the launch of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Strategy and Action Plan (2026–2035) in Johannesburg, Minister John Steenhuisen expressed South Africa’s strong support for the new strategy and the Kampala Declaration.

Global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise despite decades of efforts, with 2024 marking another record increase. Deforestation is exacerbating climate issues by disrupting the biosphere’s cooling mechanisms. Forests act as natural air conditioners through evapotranspiration, producing clouds, rainfall, and winds that regulate temperature and hydrate land.

Excessive rainfall in South Africa boosts grazing veld, reducing livestock feed costs, but also increases animal diseases like Rift Valley fever, heartwater, and bluetongue, particularly in areas like the Karoo. Smallholder farmers struggle to access vaccines, and erratic weather may lead to more frequent crop and animal diseases.

The FAO Food Price Index rose 1% in April 2025 to 128 points, up 8% from last year but 20% below its March 2022 peak. The increase is driven by higher prices for grains, dairy, and meat due to tighter supplies and rising demand, particularly in the EU. These pressures are expected to be temporary, with supply recovery anticipated.

Nampo 2025, expecting around 900 exhibitors, will take place with the theme ‘Global agriculture, locally rooted,’ addressing global agricultural challenges and opportunities for local grain producers. The event follows a record-breaking 2024 with 86,474 visitors. It will feature advanced agricultural technology, including machinery, climate-adaptive seeds, agri-finance, and digital solutions.
