Weight Loss: A Multimillion-Dollar Industry, But at What Cost to Your Health? FULL ARTICLE
Weight loss has become a multimillion-dollar industry. There are products, programmes, injections, supplements and promises of quick results everywhere you look. Some people lose weight, but the important question is this: What happens to your health when weight loss is approached incorrectly?
In my 25 years of practising real health, I have seen how desperate people can become when they want to lose weight. When clients come to my practice and tell me how much money they have spent on different weight-loss programmes, products and treatments, I am often astonished. They have tried one thing after another, hoping to find a lasting solution, yet many are still struggling with their weight and overall health.
It concerns me when people's desperation becomes an opportunity for others to make money without properly addressing the reasons behind their weight problems. Losing weight should never be only about seeing a smaller number on the scale. It should be about improving your health, maintaining muscle, supporting your metabolism and protecting your long-term wellbeing.
Your body is not your enemy. Your body has natural systems designed to regulate energy, process nutrients, eliminate waste products and maintain balance. However, these systems depend on many factors, including your food and drink, physical activity, sleep, stress levels, hormones, genetics and general health.
When I conduct an assessment in my practice, I look beyond the number on the scale. I want to understand the bigger picture and identify factors that may be contributing to the person's difficulties. Weight management is complex, and there is no single explanation or solution that works for everyone.
The mistake many people make is to follow advice from social media, content creators or people who may have limited practical experience in healthcare. They purchase supplements, combine different products or follow restrictive diets without understanding what they are taking or whether it is appropriate for them.
Some weight-loss approaches can cause unwanted effects, particularly when they are poorly supervised, nutritionally inadequate or unsuitable for the individual. Certain medicines also have risks and side effects, which is why they require proper medical assessment and monitoring. Never stop prescribed medication without consulting your healthcare professional.
We are constantly bombarded with information about staying young, looking good, losing weight and living longer. Yet the more information people receive, the more confused they often become. Online information and individual studies can be useful, but they cannot replace proper assessment and experienced professional guidance.
Four important areas of real health
In my approach to real health, there are four important areas that deserve attention.
First, support the body's natural detoxification systems. The liver, kidneys, digestive tract, lungs and other systems work together to process and eliminate waste products. They need adequate nutrition, hydration and appropriate medical care when necessary.
Second, keep chronic inflammation under control. A balanced diet, regular movement, sufficient sleep and addressing underlying health problems can all contribute to better metabolic health.
Third, support your immune system. Good nutrition, physical activity, sleep and the correction of genuine nutritional deficiencies help maintain normal immune function.
Fourth, protect your bone marrow and blood-cell production. Bone marrow plays an essential role in producing blood cells. Adequate nutrition and the investigation of relevant deficiencies or medical problems are important for maintaining this function.
We must also pay attention to the digestive system, daily physical activity, adequate oxygen delivery and sensible exposure to natural sunlight. These are parts of a broader approach to health, not isolated solutions to weight loss.
Behind these processes are many important biological mechanisms, including methylation, glutathione production, protein synthesis and cellular ATP production. ATP supplies the energy our cells need to function. These processes depend on the body's overall condition and the availability of the nutrients required to support them.
The correct raw materials, at the correct time
There is another important principle that people often overlook. It is not simply about taking supplements or adding more products to your daily routine. You need the correct raw materials, at the correct time, in the correct combination, and according to an appropriate plan for your individual needs.
More is not necessarily better. Combining products without understanding their ingredients, purpose and potential interactions can create unnecessary risks. This is why assessment should come before deciding what support a person may need.
At Quanlim Life, we focus on understanding the individual and identifying nutritional and lifestyle factors that may need attention. We believe in using appropriate, good-quality raw materials to support the body's normal functions where needed, rather than simply adding another product to an already confusing routine.
But there is something important you must understand: even the correct raw materials are not the whole answer. You must also be willing to change your habits.
Change your eating, drinking and emotional habits
You need to look honestly at what you eat and drink every day. Are you giving your body nutritious food, adequate water and the nutrients it needs? Are you moving enough, sleeping properly and allowing your body time to recover? These everyday decisions influence your long-term health and weight management.
Just as important are your emotional habits. Ongoing stress, unresolved emotional difficulties, comfort eating and unhealthy routines can influence how you eat, sleep and care for yourself. Recognising these patterns and learning healthier ways to manage them can be an important part of the process.
You cannot expect lasting results if you continue doing the same things while hoping that a new product will solve everything. Raw materials may support normal body functions when there is a genuine need, but they cannot replace healthy habits, a balanced diet, physical activity or appropriate medical care.
Sustainable weight management requires a complete approach. It means looking at what goes into your body, how you live, how you manage stress and emotions, and whether underlying health issues need professional attention. Where necessary, medical assessment and evidence-based treatment should form part of that approach.
Your health is your responsibility
At Quanlim Life, my philosophy is simple: understand the individual before deciding what support may be appropriate. We focus on assessment, nutrition, lifestyle, emotional wellbeing and suitable raw materials, together with ongoing maintenance.
No responsible practitioner should promise that one assessment, supplement or programme will solve every weight problem. Every person is different, and results depend on many factors.
Your body is the only one you have. Do not allow desperation, misleading promises or the pursuit of quick results to determine your health decisions.
Real health requires the correct support, at the correct time, combined with a willingness to change.
Invest in understanding your body before investing in another weight-loss promise. Change your eating and drinking habits, address unhealthy emotional patterns, and seek guidance from appropriately qualified and experienced healthcare professionals.
Your long-term health is worth far more than the number on your scale.
EXCLUSIVE ARTICLE OF THE WEEK ( Not posted on social media)Many people focus on their weight, waistline and appearance but overlook one of the most important aspects of healthy ageing: the strength of their legs.
Research has linked greater muscle strength with better physical function and a lower risk of premature death in older adults. One study involving adults aged 70 to 79 found that those with stronger legs had a significantly lower risk of dying during the follow-up period. Although stronger legs alone cannot guarantee a longer life, maintaining muscle strength is an important part of staying healthy as we age.
Your legs do far more than carry you from one place to another. They help you walk, climb stairs, get up from a chair, maintain balance and recover when you stumble. Strong legs support independence and help reduce the risk of falls, allowing you to remain active for longer.
Muscles also play an important role in metabolism. They use glucose for energy and help regulate blood sugar. Maintaining muscle mass supports physical resilience and helps the body cope with illness, inactivity and the challenges of ageing.
Walking speed is another important indicator of health in older adults. When walking becomes slower and everyday activities become more difficult, it may indicate declining muscle strength, balance or general health.
Walking, cycling and running are valuable for cardiovascular fitness and endurance. However, progressive resistance training is particularly important for building and maintaining muscle strength. This means gradually increasing the challenge as your body becomes stronger.
Five useful exercises are squats, Romanian deadlifts, calf raises, lunges and step-ups. These exercises train the muscles needed for standing, lifting, climbing and walking. Beginners can start with chair squats, supported calf raises and low step-ups before progressing to more challenging movements.
For many adults, strength training two or three times a week is a sensible goal. Two or three sets of 8–15 repetitions can be effective, depending on your fitness and experience. Choose a level of resistance that challenges you without compromising your technique, and allow your muscles time to recover.
Nutrition is equally important. Your muscles need sufficient protein, energy, vitamins and minerals to repair and maintain themselves. A balanced diet, adequate hydration and quality sleep all support recovery and physical performance.
If you are older, have joint problems or have not exercised for a long time, start gradually and seek professional guidance when necessary. Consistency and correct technique are more important than lifting heavy weights too soon.
Do not wait until your legs become weak before you start looking after them. Regular movement, strength training, good nutrition and recovery are investments in your future health.
Healthy ageing is not simply about living longer. It is about maintaining the strength and independence to enjoy those years. Look after your legs today so that you can continue walking confidently, remaining active and living life to the fullest.

At Quanlim Life, we believe no two people are the same. Your DNA, your environment, your habits, and even your stress levels make you unique. That means what works for one person may not work for you — and that’s why so many “one-size-fits-all” solutions fail. Be careful of health claims that promise miracle cures or quick fixes for serious conditions. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Real healing is not about chasing the next product — it’s about understanding your body and addressing the root cause. Stop following generic solutions — start following what your body truly needs. You are in charge of your body mind and soul. Don’t stop any prescribed treatment without medical advice. The alternative therapies can be complementary, but not necessarily replacements.
